C. Paul Heins was elected the LGCW’s fifth music director in April of 2003. Previously, Paul served as the ensemble’s principal accompanist (2000-2002) and as the interim director (August 2002 – April 2003). Paul is a 1996 graduate (B.Mus.) of Bowling Green State University and a 2000 graduate (M.Mus.) of the University of Maryland at College Park. His principal teachers have been Victoria Harris and Virginia Marks (piano), Judith Bentley and William Montgomery (flute), and Mark S. Kelly (conducting).
In addition to his work with the LGCW, Paul is an adjunct music instructor at Georgetown University, a position he has held since 2002. In fall 2006, Paul will serve as interim director of GU’s concert choir and will teach Diatonic Harmony, in addition to maintaining his piano studio. Paul is also the manager for the professional web site of composer Jennifer Higdon.
Active as a pianist and flutist around the DC area, Paul has performed with Washington Opera’s Opera Camp for Kids; theatrical productions of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington (Ruthless, When Pigs Fly, and You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown), Georgetown University (The Colored Museum, Assassins, Urinetown, Shakespeare’s A Winter’s Tale, and next season’s A New Brain), and the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (Iolanthe, Patience, HMS Pinafore); and ensembles which have included the Washington Men’s Camerata, the Heritage Signature Chorale, the Prince George’s Philharmonic, and The Arlington Players. Paul is the former music director of the family service at St. David’s Episcopal Church (2003-2006). He lives in northwest Washington with his partner, Matt.
